Ian talks to Ology about saving the world and Damon

One glimpse at The Vampire Diaries’ badass Damon Salvatore might have given you and Terron R. Moore the impression that the man behind his madness is just as reckless as his brutal alter-ego. But you’d be wrong. Ology flew down to Atlanta and discovered the truth: Ian Somerhalder is trying to save the world.

OLOGY: What’s your Ology?

IAN SOMERHALDER: ConserveOlogy. I’m all about conservation.

If I can ask, what made you get involved and create The Ian Somerhalder Foundation? A lot of people want to create social change, but people don’t always do something about it.

Just being from a really delicate ecosystem—I’m from the Gulf Coast in Louisiana—so it’s literally one of the most delicate ecosystems in the world. It’s so unique and amazing. 45% of all the wetlands in America are in Louisiana where I grew up. If we lose those, we’re screwed. Which we pretty muchdid, after BP. And that feeling of helplessness... I decided that no one should ever feel that way.So our organization is all about empowering people through education. And it’s unfortunate, but the education in this country is lacking. There’s a lack of information out there, but the positive spin on that is that there’s so much media and social networking that we can now transfer information so quickly. And it’s really catching on. It’s absolutely awe-inspiring.That sounds awesome.I mean, think about it- 50% of all species will be extinct in 50 years, if we don’t do something about it.

How do you find time to do all of this?

No. [Expletive]. Idea. (Laughs) But the youth of the world… they’re a powerful group. It’s a new Generation X. And our outreach goes as far as Pakistan, India, Afghanistan… and then there’s the ISF Kids Army, and it’s kids from 6 to 15. A year and a half ago, a 6-year old girl sent ISF her tooth fairy money. She wanted to change the world. 6 years old. And she said “I know I don’t have a voice, but I want one.” So we said, okay, we’ll give you a voice. And now this kid has like 10,000 twitter followers. She’s 7 now, and she’s protesting and yelling and screaming at Obama and rallying all of these kids together. She sent me a picture [of her protest] and I retweeted it and it had over a million hits in a few days.Wow, that’s really cool.Yeah, there’s kids like that all over that don’t have a voice, but now these little guys get together and figure it out- they’re setting up recycling programs, they’re turning off their TVs when they leave… even showing their parents better ways to do things. It’s crazy.

So let’s talk about The Vampire Diaries. Damon has done a lot of wrong to Elena over the years, but his reasoning for that has been good… right?

Yeah, killing someone’s brother is clearly the best way to say ‘I love you’! (Laughs) But there’s reasons we do everything.So why is Damon so cynical?You know, humor is a medicine for pain. It’s like a Band-Aid. There’s so much pain in these guys’ lives, and they use humor as medicine. And it works.

With the fanbase the way it is, people are very adamant that Elena be with either Damon or Stefan. But in your opinion, you see a point where the show ends and Elena doesn’t end up with one of the Salvatore boys?

Oh, I could totally see that. I mean, I think that the best thing for her would be to not end up with a Salvatore. But it’ll be tough. I have no idea. I mean, I think she’d be crazy to be with one of them. But love is weird, and love is odd. People always talk about this Damon and Elena relationship, and I just can’t see that happening. I mean, he is pretty enticing, and suave, and he’s charming. But he’s a dick. He really is.

Klaus, Katherine, Stefan and Damon included in SFX's top 50 Vampires 2012

So the dashing Stefan played by Paul Wesley entered SFX's list at #15 heres what they had to say " The Vampire Diaries has been the real success story of this poll, with Stefan being the first of multiple characters from the show who barely registered with our voters last time around but who now dominate the upper reaches of this latest Top 50. Poor old Paul Wesley was hampered with the less interesting brother to play out of the Salvatore brothers, a wet Luke Skywalker (with Will Shuester hair) to Damon’s roguish Han Solo, and it’s easy to underestimate what a great job Wesley did bringing some charisma and wit to the role. But recently, Stefan has gone all Angelus on us, and Wesley looks like he’s having a blast being all randomly evil. If they don’t turn him back, he could place even higher next time."

While Klaus played by the marvellous Joseph Morgan scooped #7

"After suffering the ignominy of being introduced to the series in the guise of one of its dullest characters (though for a scant few weeks Alaric actually seemed interesting), Klaus emerged in the flesh as the lanky lead singer of a British indie band who probably spends his time off surfing in New Quay. Initially, the idea that we were supposed to take this guy as a serious big bad seemed ludicrous. It was like getting Chris Martin of Coldplay to play a werewolf (oh, hang on… Lost Girl’s done that). But rapidly, Klaus was revealed his true colours – mostly blood red and a black, black heart. Callously evil to a jawdropping extent, Klaus will slice someone in half or use them as a dartboard just because he feels like it. He looks rubbish in his flashback wigs, though. It’s a tradition amongst small-screen vampires, clearly."

our sassy Katherine played by the stunning Nina Dobrev came in at #6

"The evil vampire doppelganger of The Vampire Diaries’ Elena, Katherine has been spelling double trouble for the Salvatore brothers ever since she sired them. She really fancies Stefan, but isn’t averse to leading Damon up the garden path when it suits her. Amoral, self-seeking and outrageously flirtatious, she looks great in a 19th century frock and is useful as an Elena stand-in when the show needs to shock you into thinking Elena’s been killed."

BUT it was our deliciously dashing Damon played by the gorgeous Ian Somerhalder who scooped the #1 spot beating out tough competition

"So here he is. The man who’s has deposed Spike from the number one spot. And who could begrudge him? Damon is the new Spike: bad boy? Check. Sharp wit? Check. Willingness to go shirtless? Check? julie plec dishes to TV guide on upcoming Delena loving

So this is what TV guide found out from Julie Plec:

When The Vampire Diaries returns on Thursday, Jan. 5 at 8/7c on The CW, Elena may finally be ready to say goodbye to Stefan and welcome in Damon's love. "[Elena and Damon] are trying very hard to understand that the Stefan that they know is gone forever and that he betrayed them," executive producer Julie Plec tells TVGuide.com. "Elena understands ... that ultimately it's time for her to move on with her life and not hold onto a ghost of her past."

When the CW series left off, Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Elena (Nina Dobrev) believed their plan to defeat Klaus (Joseph Morgan) was foiled because Stefan (Paul Wesley) stepped in and saved him. What they didn't know was that Stefan did so to avoid Klaus' minions from then going after Damon. "One of the big things in the episode back, however, is when Stefan reappears in their lives," Plec says. "At what point do they start to understand the part he played in saving Damon's life and then what does that mean to each of them?"Although Stefan may eventually explain himself to his former love, he has one person on his mind, and it's not Elena. "Stefan is definitely acting from a place of aggressive and not completely rational spite [towards Klaus]," Plec says. "That is going to be a big issue for Elena [and she'll say], 'You could've handled this differently, you can be different, you could feel differently and is winning this war more important than the people you have to hurt along the way?' Right now revenge is definitely his priority." Meanwhile, Klaus will be quite the opponent. "We're going to continue to explore his vulnerabilities while also making him madder and madder and more violent and more evil," Plec says.

With Stefan off focusing on Klaus, Damon and Elena will continue to lean on each other — although Damon, Plec adds, will be back to "acting out, day-drinking, pouting and being generally curmudgeonly." But the romantic tension will build and Elena will have a hard time denying it. "Now that Stefan is out of the picture, in her mind there's a way to free herself up and allow that tension to come out and play," Plec says. "The question of 'Does Elena love Damon [and] has she been fully falling for him all along?' is going to be very much a part of the season."But life in Mystic Falls is never without complication and Elena will have quite a few things on her plate. First, there's the fact that she killed Rebekah, and when the Original sister gets undaggeredshe'll be pissed off, to say the least. Elena will also start to see how she's just as capable of destruction as her vampire peers. "Elena realizes that in order to survive and in order to protect the people she loves the most, sometimes she has to behave more like Katherine than Elena, and sometimes a dark choice needs to be made, a violent act needs to be enacted and it's troubling for her," Plec says. "So who is she really at her core? She's clearly not the girl-next-door do-gooder, she never has been."

Vampire Diaries returns Thursday, Jan. 5 at 8/7c on The CW.

Delena kiss on the way ?? and the death of a main character ??

So E! online has given us some juicy scoop from the TVD set:

"Ariannagirlq1: How about some Vampire Diaries scoop! I’m dying for the show to return.
And some of you fans are gonna be dying when you see an epic kiss scene that is happening very soon! Confession: I squealed a little when I heard about it. Any guesses who’s puckering up? In other news, a main character we know and love is leaving Mystic Falls, thanks (indirectly) to Damon."

So will it be elena and damon puckering up ? It seems likely to us as their chemistry and tension has been building up and up during season 3 so far and there is only so long they can contain that for. Also in regards to the main character that is leaving mystic falls this does sound like a death *sad face* but who ? its all exciting and not long now to wait till TVD is back on our screens so make sure to tune into the CW on thursday 5th january at 8pm.

So Ian tweeted earlier today saying "Of course 1st day back from a stuffing-your-face holiday, Damon Salvatore is naked... WTF?! ! well i think you will all agree with me that this is something to definately look forward to when TVD returns in january because we all do love a naked Damon scene :p I wonder whether it will be another shower scene or maybe he may have a companion hmmm that would be interesting to know.

Scoop on Damon and Elena's growing chemistry

So Zap2it's carina mackenzie managed to get some scoop on the developing relationship between Damon and Elena in season 3 from julie plec and here is what julie had to say:

in last week's episode, Damon insisted that Elena admit that she was worried about him, because, as he said, if Stefan does get his act together, Damon doesn't want Elena to forget how close they've grown while little bro has been gone. Their friendship certainly deepened over the summer, though all Elena would admit to was that she cares whether Damon lives or dies. It's not exactly the stuff of romance novels.

"There's yet to be an admission of that chemistry from her part," executive producer Julie Plec said in a Q&A that Zap2it attended on Wednesday. In the Oct. 6 episode, "Disturbing Behavior," Elena's refusal to admit to her feelings for Damon may be addressed."Next week's episode kind of illuminates that a little bit," Plec confirms. "A lot's gone unsaid. There's a big elephant in the room as far as all these fun little stolen moments and romantic banter and their dynamic with each other. It hasn't gone unnoticed with other people."With Stefan continuing to self-destruct (and to other-people-destruct, too), Elena's besties aren't going to let her stay in denial too long. "[As Elena is back] in Mystic Falls trying to pick up the pieces and get on with her life, it's the kind of thing that her friends and her loved ones are going to [point out]," Plec says. "We're going to have some fun with that."

So it looks like others are definately going to be picking up on Damon and Elena's chemistry and we did kind of see a bit of that through alaric last week when he said to elena "do you know what you're doing there?" after Damon left elena's bedroom. Also caroline and tyler dont seem to be buying that elena kissing damon was just a goodbye kiss. So it seems that eyes are being opened to their possible sizzling chemistry.

E! online scoop on Katherine, Elena, Stefan and Damon

Kevin Williamson tells us, “Katherine (Nina Dobrev) doesn’t pop up right away. She hauled ass.” However, Katherine won’t stay gone for long. “Katherine is too delicious to go too long without seeing.” So what can we expect from our resident evil vampy vampire who only loves herself? Let’s just say that when one of the brothers is away, Katherine will play. We know, can we vague that up for ya? But you’ll take what we give you and you’ll like it! (Or just send us angry tweets. Whichever you prefer.)

Sunchick116: Any good Stefan/Elena info at all? Or should we just prepare to cry ourselves to sleep the whole season?

Apologies to your tear ducts, but like we said last week Stefan (Paul Wesley) is gone for the first half or so of the season, so we don’t think that bodes well for The Vampire Diaries’ longstanding couple. As for the show’s not-really-a-couple-but-basically-a-couple, Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Elena, I’m hearing he’s going to be giving her the Big U soon. The Big U being an ultimatum, obviously.

Kristin dos santos gives some Delena and stefan S3 scoop

So Kristin at E! has shared some scoop on Delena and wayward Stefan in season 3 she said "They are totally hooking up! But the bad news is i'm a very bad person for leading you on because they are hooking up in a strictly detective like fashion to find stefan." but she does offer hope and goes on to say "From what i hear, the dealio is that there won't be any hot and heavy romance stuff in the first half of the season. But, guess what it doesn't look like Stefan even wants to be found, and that may change things. I hear Stefan will be gone for the first half of the season...ish" so basically Kristin is saying that for the first half of the season Damon and Elena are gonna purely be working together to find Stefan, it sounds like elena is still very much hooked on Stefan and holding out hope for him, but when she sees how he has changed and finds out that he may not want to be found will she run into Damon's arms ? i guess we will just have to watch and find out.

Damon takes a dip with Elena in new still from S3E2 "The Hybrid"

So in this new still from "The Hybrid" we can see Damon joining elena in the lake that we saw her in from previous stills. So as we revealed before the scene is supposed to be quite flirty and happy even though they both look quite intense in the stills. Who else is super excited for this scene ? i know i am.

Ian on stefans ripper rampage

Just a little over a month until "The Vampire Diaries" Season 3 premieres on Sept. 15 at 8 p.m. on The CW. The first episode, "The Birthday," takes place on Elena's 18th -- but she's having a tough time celebrating with her friends while her boyfriend is indulging his monster instincts all over the country.

The new trailer released is positively sizzling (Hello, Caroline jumping into bed with Tyler. Hello. Rewind. Pause. Hello.) and gives away some juicy moments from the first episode. In it, we see Damon tell Elena, "Stefan's gone, Elena. You can forget about him. He's not coming back."

Has Damon given up on Stefan? We talked to Ian Somerhalder to get the scoop.

"Damon knows this cycle with his brother," Somerhalder tells us. "He's seen it before, totally. He says to Elena, 'Stefan's not coming back. Not in your lifetime.' I mean, she's young, but human beings only live maybe eighty years. For Stefan and Damon, that's nothing. Unless Klaus rips their hearts out, they're going to live for another thousand years."

Damon still has some hope that Stefan will eventually be Stefan again, but in the meantime, he's been tracking his brother's progress with newspaper clippings that hint at the havoc that Stefan and Klaus are wreaking. In the beginning of the season premiere, though, Damon isn't actively searching for Stefan.

"I don't think that Damon's focus is really to save Stefan, because he understands that if Stefan doesn't want to be found, he's not going to be, and in some weird way Damon respects that. He's been there, too, not very long ago," he says.

Despite everything, though, Somerhalder says that Damon isn't aggressively pursuing Elena in his brother's absence. "He wants Elena to be happy and he wants her to be safe," he explains, "and she'll try anything crazy to find Stefan, so he's looking out for her."

Judging by the trailer, Damon and Stefan aren't exactly giving each other man-hugs when they do finally reunite. "Oh, make no mistake about it, Damon's pissed off at Stefan," Somerhalder laughs. "For two seasons he tried to get Stefan to do exactly what he's doing now, to drink blood, with Damon. And now he's running off doing exactly that thing, but with some a**hole that Damon can't stand. A guy that tried to kill Damon and everyone they care about."

Is Damon feeling a little jealous of Klaus, perhaps? "Stefan's left Damon here in Mystic Falls. Now he's got to protect this girl that he loves, but that he can't have, because it's his brother's girl -- and even though it's Damon, he can't do that to his brother," Somerhalder says. "And even if he could, she doesn't love him anyway. She wants his brother. So when he finally sees Stefan, it's like, 'I tried for two seasons to get you to do this and now you're off running around with this idiot.' That's all Damon wanted in Season 1, was his brother to run around with him and munch on sorority girls and bring down the house wherever they went, and Stefan said no. Now he's left Damon here all by himself, to fend for himself, and protect this girl who is 150 years his junior. He's not happy about it."

On some level, Stefan is enjoying the ripping -- he had to work so hard to be noble and good for so long that giving in to his weaknesses now takes a bit of a weight off his shoulders. As you'll see in the first few episodes of the season, Stefan doesn't plan on coming back for Elena. He thinks she's better off without him... and when he's in this state, he's probably right.

There's been a definite role reversal -- though we will say that Stefan's "ripper" rampage is much bloodier than the spree of killings we saw from Damon in Season 1 -- and we couldn't help but wonder if Somerhalder misses the days when Damon was bloodthirsty, reckless, and a little unhinged.

"I do, a lot, but I realize that there are ebbs and flows," he says. "This is a hundred-episode arc of a character, and he can't just be one dimensional. I was worried that Damon was becoming this hero, and Kevin [Williamson] said 'No, he's not the hero. He needs to be, but he's the anti-hero, because he's supposed to be not hurting people, but that's not his nature.' So he slips, and his response is 'Screw this.' Now, I think that struggle, that push and pull for Damon is what's going to make this season interesting for me as an actor and interesting for Damon as a character. I don't want to lose that quote-unquote 'bad' side of Damon." He pauses, then adds, "You're not going to see Damon crying this season. Trust me.

TVD season 3 episode 1 - first official still and title revealed

so here is the first official still from season 3 episode 1 which is titled "The Birthday" fittingly as its going to show elenas 18th birthday. so it appears in the picture that elena and damon are holding hands but on a closer second look this is not the case unfortunately he is holding a glass and elenas hand is on her hip. We can also see from the picture that Damon and Alaric have a bottle of their favourite tipple - bourbon. We can take a guess at what their conversation is going to be about - Stefan. I really cant wait for this first episode now, roll on september.

Ian on Damons birthday present to Elena

Zap2it spoke with Ian Somerhalder on Tuesday, we grilled him on all things Damon and Elena (Nina Dobrev). As we know, Season 3 begins with Elena's 18th birthday party, an impressive soiree that Caroline plans -- of course -- at the Salvatore house.

We're sure Elena will get plenty of birthday presents, since she's clearly the most beloved person in Mystic Falls, ever, but with Stefan missing in action, the gift we're wondering about the most is Damon's.

Somerhalder tells us that the present is rather unconventional. "She refuses to let him buy her anything, so he doesn't technically give her anything for her birthday," he says. "But he came across something that she really, really, really wanted and needed, and he did what he had to do to get it for her. She thinks that he stole it, or that he found it. It's a very beautiful moment between them. It's a really sweet, quiet moment."

The gift will definitely remind us of Stefan's absence, but we'll say this about the scene: it's practically tailor-made to be plastered all over your tumblrs, Damon/Elena fans.
